Many waters cannot quench love, rivers cannot wash it away.
Song of Songs 8:7

Maybe I should not write about sex.  It is a bit.. naughty.

Says who?  Who says that?  Who’s spinning us a yarn here?

Song of Songs could be viewed as just being Erotica.  There appears to be a strong focus on self around and maybe that has had an influence on the view of this scripture.

The Bible has a different focus.  Not self, but Christ.

The entirety of the Bible points towards Him.  I believe Song of Songs is a sex symbol, an arrow pointing to the love of Christ and our joining with Him.

Sex is a symbol, a picture of the closeness we, The Body of Christ, will experience with Christ, The Head – The two will become one flesh.  Sex is a symbol of unity.

Sex is an expression of no sexual interest in any other person but our husband or wife – just as repentance is an expression of no interest in any other god or idol.

Sex becomes not much more than erotica when we focus on what we can get out of it -  when we look inwardly.

A bit like how our relationship with God becomes nothing but ‘religion’ when we focus on how He can serve us.

Song of Songs indicates that we are to share intimacy with our spouse only and God’s plan is for us to enjoy that to the fullest and that we celebrate in the oneness of other couples and other couples celebrate in the oneness of our marriage.

But we do not look covetously at other people in those other couples.

However, there is a prevalence of ‘What’s in it for me’ out there that tends to consider this a lame attitude.

The world tries to sell us a ‘what’s in it for me sex’ and dresses it up to look great.

But in reality we know that it is lifeless and empty, just like idols in our lives.

Real sex is filled with life, joy and love, just like our one true living God.

What if we directed every ounce of our sexual energy towards our spouse without looking either to the left or to the right at other potentially interested parties?

I imagine our sex life would be pretty amazing, just like I imagine there would be tremendous joy in putting every ounce of trust in Christ and not looking to the left or right.

I heard a while ago a preacher speak about this scripture:
22Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Saviour. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

Plenty of room for deception there... if we look inwardly.... ‘wives, submit to your husbands’... good news if you are a man right??

But the preacher asked how did Christ love the church?  He sacrificed himself for it.  He died for it.
Marriage and sex points towards Christ.

We are to submit ourselves to Christ, but then Christ does not rub his hands with glee and then dominate over us (but that can be the deception in marriage can’t it?)
Christ gave His life for us.

Submission and sacrifice.  Giving and giving.  Representing Christ.  No inward looking.  No selfishness.

O what a great picture then of husbands and wives around the globe spanning different time zones having sex as an expression of a wife (the church body) submitting to her husband and her husband (Christ, the head) sacrificing his life for her.

Everything points to Christ.  It’s all about Him.

Sex.  Something smutty, a bit underground, a bit hush hush, or a symbol of our relationship with a perfect Lord and Saviour.

The choice is ours.

Many waters cannot quench love, rivers cannot wash it away.
Song of Songs 8:7

38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39
