 once upon a time

"Taptoe"

Shut down the day, turn off the beer taps.
Close the shutters, seek the freedom of sleep.
Taptoe once signaled peace and serenity.
Today, taptoe is the plaintive voice of the dead.

All around the world the sound is heard: Crying,
sighing, dying of the silenced men on 1 of July 1916.
Lest we forget is an universal claim of remembrance.
It belongs to the dead, as does the truth: we will
remember them. Not only at the going down of the sun,
but throughout the days and years of painful parting.

This moment of remembrance in the poignant bugle
states, that the war to end all wars is never ending.
all around the world we are in conflict, with humanity.
When will we return to the end of days, and ‘taptoe’
