 What Did The Geese Know?

On the way
(as we were driving)
the sky was darkened
suddenly filled with skein
after skein of geese.
Loud and raucous. Not at peace.
Or merely having a lot to say.
It was odd. Perhaps disturbing.
I checked the time. One half hour to four.
Earlier,
I had complained of not getting presents.
He said "Why don't we go to the mall."
Knowing we never go.
We were headed in that direction
when we saw the inner city sky fill up
with black clouds of geese.
And then we stopped on the way
to do an errand
at a small chain grocery store.
The clerk said "Hello Lady in purple,
have you heard what happened at the mall?"
"A shooting."
"Right around three-thirty."
We walked outside the store,
with our packages in hand.
Our eyes looking mall-ward.
Seeing the sky filled with dark
moving lighted objects,
we, momentarily were rooted to the spot.
Helicopter sentries, encircling the mall.
The sky again altered
by oddness.
What did the geese know?
