There's a ghost in the streetlights it turns them to green
The streets are still empty and the change is unseen
I can hear the ghosts singing through my window screen
They don't sing in words but I know what they mean
They're tearing the branches from the elm tree
They're changing the lights that nobody can see
They're singing a song of their sad destiny
And the power lines shake with electricity
She's angry with me for speaking at night
And waking her up in the April moonlight
The life out the window is out of her sight
It's a dead kind of living that isn't quite right
I go back to hearing the dead moaning sound
Whipping the wires and branches around
I think that someday that elm tree will fall down
And I'll have to clean it all up off the ground
The ghosts in the wire are changing to red
They howl and pretend that they're not really dead
Their song is running around in my head
I won't soon forget what they said
