 Poetry and Stories

My books tell the rags to riches story of 86-year-old humanitarian Isaac ("Ike") Heller, better known as "Grandpa."  Ike, who is founder of Heller Industrial Parks and Remco Toy Company, has dedicated his life to helping others.  This month he will donate one million dollars to the child care center which he built -- and has subsidized for more than 25 years -- on the premises of his Edison, New Jersey industrial Center.  Ike's goal?  "To be remembered as a good guy."

I glance at the mirror
And what do I see?
A tired old woman
Scowls back at me.

I have a question
So I take another look
Why am I writing
Another book?

This new book is about business
And what do I know?
The woman in the mirror
Tells me so.

It's my last book
And the end of word struggles
Is this the way to go?

I face the dreaded computer screen
And what do I see?
A magic word: PERSISTANCE
Winks back at me.

Then I remember the words I wrote
More than thirty years ago
I called the piece

It is not possible
To win the impossible
This would probably cause grief.
Don't try it.

It is possible
To win the almost impossible
Through much effort and a lot of restraint.
This would probably cause satisfaction.
Try it.

The almost impossible
Is not decorated
With roses and red ribbons
As is the impossible.
But it's attainable.

Wouldn't you rather
Swim than sink?
Wouldn't you???????

I pack up my tape recorder
Pad and pen
I'm on my way to the office
Here we go again!

I say to myself
Self, I say
This is what I resolve to do.
I will write this book
And write poetry too!

Thank you God.
