A House in the Country

As I meander through the tangling undergrowth, my feet hindered by tentacles of spindly vines. Absorbing new surroundings in various muted hues as the morning sun struggles to permeate the forest canopy. The freshness in the morning air feels revitalising on my sun dried skin. Bell birds make tingling sounds that mirror the sparkling dew dropping from verdant green leaves. Morning has broken with a promise of good things to come. This gives my mind reason to drift into a labyrinth of fantasies surrounded by this surreal and mystical environment.
Increasing light makes its way through trees as I approach the forest's edge. Slowly opening up to a vista of patchwork fields over age old rolling hills. In the distant valley ahead, a house stands proudly surrounded by an overgrown, forgotten cottage garden. As I near the country home I spy hollyhocks and nasturtiums rising above the other dense foliage. Lupins soar skywards with outstretched hands of colour as an offering to the morning sun. The sweet scent of mint gently teases my nostrils as I stand before on old rickety gate, barring my entry towards this empty abode. A path of broken paving stones leads the way while its' edges are lost in the encroaching miniature jungle. The house is devout of any human form with an aura of abandonment as it stands alone against the world that draws forever near.
The rusty old gate creaks against its' hinges as I lay a heavy stone to arrest its need to spring back. My slow walk along its' fractured path fills my senses with fragrant aromas of unkempt  flora.
With red brick patched with sandstone, scattered randomly on its' moss covered facade, an air of nobility dominated the old cottage. Window now opaque as a layer of dust coated its' interior reflects my image back to me, while guarding its hidden secrets inside. A starling's nest rested in the corner of the window sash, like a sentry box for a royal manor. Bees were busy working undisturbed among the abundant blooms heavy with nectar, their buzzing in harmony with nature.
What stories these old walls could tell, but silence suits the homestead more. I will never been so in touch with my senses more. A house in the country, a rural retreat, accepting only one visitor at a time, a singular gift of  a world at peace with itself.
