 once upon a time

Street names remain the same, all

else is change. Places I strolled years ago

only familiar from the cobbles left underfoot.

Commercial court, first place I ever worked,

presented with a bike, first one I ever had.

Only catch was, you’re now a message boy, wow.

Asked, you know where Gt Victoria St is, of course.

In the weeks to come I’d be there in ten minutes.

That first day at work, it took me an hour to find it.

Lot of change since, vans and cars deliver the goods.

Horse and carts, message boys on bikes, all replaced.

Wonder at the rushing hurly-burly of life, gotta have it, right now.

Lot of years flown by since then, today I wander these streets

of change, thinking what was it all about. I’ve changed, retired now.

Wandered different streets in all the years since, knowing now,

if I hadda do it over, I’d travel the same old streets again.

Weren’t nothing wrong with the life I lived. Moved around quite

a bit, though not on a bicycle, on planes, trains and automobiles.

Street names all that remained the same during years of change.
