Once these children sat on Grandpa's lap
"Read us a story Grandpa!"
Oh how great and knowledgeable Grandpa was
"Can I go out and play with Tommy Grandpa?"
Not as important as I once was
As I watch them grow I too grow--old
"Did you really play basketball Grandpa?"
My boy who taught you to shoot?"
Now I sit and watch in awe
And yes they are better than I ever wuz
And I rest a while on my cane because
The sun rose this morning I waited for the Sunset
For the kids don't need Grandpa anymore
And then the call comes, "I scored a run a goal
I missed you Grandpa at my game."
And I remember what I was starting to forget
Grandpa need to be there as the greatest fan
And you know our job? Let me tell you about my Grandchild!
As I live each day waiting for the setting sun
Tomorrow is the annual three point shot
Hopefully they well say, "You still have it Grandpa."
Three years in a row I have made it on the first shot
Yeah I really did play basketball once a time ago
