ramblings and things

Mid Cuban crisis Berlin,
My emergency tour done,
Time for me to leave as
My replacement had come.

The pilot came to me
Said I wasn't there
If we came down
He had no duty of care.
He stood there
Shaking my hand
Told me again, asked
Do you understand.
Run off quickly
You won't be missed;
Not on my manifest
You just don't exist.
I sat there strapped in
In a state of near despair
As the Twin Pioneer
Lumbered up into the air
Out along the corridor in
The watery October sun
Back into the West
After an uneventful run.

I can look back on it now
With a wistful smile:
I'd been the man who never was
For a worrying little while.
