hmmm...how did we happen?

writing in the dark I
try to remember her
French she was or
Italian

eyebrows arched in a
continental way
exotic

lashes a thatch of black
a smile that matched
the invitation in her
amber eyes

favorite of all the boys
wearing her mother's cardigans
backwards

preferring black coffee with cream
instead
of sodas

at thirteen she was
wildness
and I was her tame friend
how did we happen?
