I loved you once, my Prince, like those who can still love
While wounded by the dense shadow of lofty despair,
With undisguised consideration and sadness,
Hidden beneath the veil of the words which keep life flowing.
Denied all destiny, I wandered with the rivers
In valleys adorned with myriads of flowers,
O unappeased tears mingling with the blue scents
Of time and clay, rhymes ancient and new.
Clad in humility, I loved you in the way the soul
Of an Evangelical saint adores Christ,
In the way the angel of brightness covers with amethysts
A child’s curls the colour of henbane.
An irreversible love, pure, immemorial
And tender as the singing of a canonical choir!
