VE Day, 2013

A football manager is retiring
But not for a month or two yet:
The newspapers blast it out
Lest any person forget.
A multi million pound business,
The modern gladiatorial games,
All those young multi millionaire
Player household names.

Another anniversary seemed ignored:
Sixty eight years ago on that very day,
Victory in Europe
War ending on its way.
Not a mention of that
Or of all the lives lost:
Or that these years of peace
Came at a great cost.

History is just history,
But football's the National game
And that football manager
Has such great popular fame,
So, who cares about that last war.
We who give them a Remembrance Day,
Wish those old men and their Poppies
Would just fade quietly away.
