Last Thoughts On A Star-Filled Night In Spring
I see him
hunched over,
ambling
down a long thin corridor
with far flung eyes.
He is mutely focused within.
No longer
the relevant
quick counter puncher.
He has no more wind.
There is a
pain where his
heart should have been.
There is
heavy rain coursing down
his street.
There are
shadows of his past
who are the only people he meets.
With
a quivering voice. but
not a wavering decision
in a hair trigger moment
he faces
his innermost derision.
No one among us
admitted to see
his red flag waving.
Known ignorance our plea.
Mostly, we kept our distance
from someone we saw
as too much like ourselves.
No one likes to look
into the face
of their own private
he**.
On a cool lonely
Thursday he decided
to move on.
Bent over a bullet
the tired warrior
sagged and
was gone.
These are my
last thoughts
on a star-filled
night
in Spring.
Lord, lay down beside me.
If you will,
I can't
sleep.
