She searched for him
in all the familiar places,
retraced the steps where they
started their life together.
She paused
in the deserted parking lot,
reminiscing their first embrace.
All these years later,
the memory of that day
still made her cheeks flush,
made her as giddy as
a teenage girl dancing
her first boy/ girl dance
after a football game.
In the dark stairwell,
she groped for his hand's warmth,
paused on the landing,
and closed her eyes tight,
remembering their first kiss.
Her lips tingled as
she remembered the ghost flutter
of his lips against hers,
the green light in his eyes
as they shone for her.
Oh, how her heart ached!
In the empty room,
she fixated on the rows
of uninhabited chairs,
and could almost visualize
him bent over a notebook
in the very front row,
second seat from the aisle.
The moment their eyes
met one another and
the universe stopped as
he whispered her name...
Some things will always
remain an indelibly carved
moment in time.
Some things,
a heart never
forgets.
II.
She searched for him
in quaint coffee shops,
on their antique green couches,
beside every piano,
in the jazz music
that spun magically
through the caffeinated air--
in neon signs
looking for baby birds
perched in nests,
signs of Spring,
of hope
that she would
find him again.
III.
She never stopped
searching for him,
calling out his name
when she awoke startled
at three a.m.
He was her soulmate,
her one true partner.
She dragged her love chains
through the depths of night,
lashed out
through the blood-red sunrise,
sobbed in the relentless rain--
She wasn't whole without him.
He was her missing puzzle piece
in the labyrinth of her heart.
It would never beat with passion
until he walked beside her
hand in hand
once again.
