Poetry And Politics

Poetry is a lot like politics:
It makes a lot of people uncomfortable

It often confuses everyone
With meaning and meter and metaphor

But politics and poetry are so human
Dealing with the nitty gritty of the very stuff

That we have to face head on or the dragons
Of our shadows take over and become more real

Then the angels of our better natures
And we end up with Hitler’s instead of Lincolns

And Stalin’s instead of FDR’s
And ego-maniacs instead of problem-solvers
