MARKY THE BACHELOR AND COACHES SON

In Markie's day the war years of "1948" baseball was a game
of patriotism. After all Ted Williams served in the war defending
America. "Rosie the riveter", was building Airplanes at Boeing.
Steroids were a thing of the future. Our heroeswere role models
for the young kids in the neighborhood who all wanted to play baseball.
If this is confusing you might want to read earlier posts. Girls
were wearing pretty dresses and were---well girls. The boys who did
not want to compete or were not good enough to play America's game
went to the pond to catch frogs and poly wogs. The teams were chosen
in a much more fair way than by the coaches selections.

One of the bigger boys who had proved his worth in combat was selected
by heredity to be Captain and choose one team. Another boy, be it
looks or popularity, would be the other Captain. One of those older boys
would throw a bat in the air and the other catch it. They would then as
if climbing a pole would hand over hand move their hands up the bat
until one could not touch the knob. If the stronger boy got angry
he would grab the nob and toss the bat a hundred yards across the field.
He would later become the high school shot putter. Choosing of teams he
would get first choice. He would then choose a member of those standing
around to be on his team,"He might yell out I want Slugger Malone and the
other I want Nelson the glove." Being bigger and stronger sometimes created
a mismatch of teams. After a sufficient amount of players were chosen the
rest were sent to the pond to help find frogs to scare the girls.
Later in this story you well figure out how often I was sent to the pond.

But today in the dawning of steroids and insane salaries a less efficient
method was found. It is called Little League, or Pony league or least I
take it to this level school teams. The bigger boys are replaced by
father's with nothing to do but exploit their children to be the athletes
they never were thenselves. If your dad was never an athlete, usually fat
and out of shape, and wants to exploit you, you become the team shortstop
and pitcher. Your best friend Howie becomes the third baseman and
pitcher. His Dad is willing to work for five dollars for two hours work
and be an umpire. The closest thing to playing he ever reached. Mom is
the scorekeeper. You hit a ball that is dropped in right field and thrown
away and you reach third it is a triple.Afterall she loves you. Markie does
the same thing and it is an error. This is why you not Markie is stat wise
the best hitter on the team. It also explains why Markie did not play high
school ball. Next time I well explain why some major league players are bigger
and stronger than others. Today I have to umpire my Grand-daughters game.
Girls baseball they throw underhand and trust me on this one. Despite
steroids they play with much bigger balls.

Sorry I have to get off the computer. The Petticoat Dictator is yelling
at me. She played girl's softball and trust me with much bigger balls. She
wants me to do something. She is saying the boys who played catcher did not
wear masks and now think they are writer's. I am going out and find a garden
snake and scare the pants off her.It was never the same after woman started
wearing jeans and were allowed to vote.
