Summer Leaves
From my bench I sit and watch
In the distance she turns and smiles
Walks away from the precipice
With new eyes she sees for miles
She sits down beside me
Talks freely about the pain
How she never thought
She would see the sun again
‘I lived for a while in autumn
Watching leaves fall from the tree
I hoped they would grow again in winter
But that was never going to be.’
‘But I planted seeds, they sprouted in the spring
April showers made them strong
As summer came they burst with life
Began to grow where they belong.’
‘I realise now he never left me
He’ll always be in my heart
He helped make me what I am today
So we will never be apart.’
‘My life is mine once more
As now I begin to see
It is accepting and understanding darkness
Not just the light that sets you free.’
