Bora born

Ton up _

The river men
once were rowers
remember when
youth had power
to meet trouble
straight head on, when
Joe Black comes
to claim your bones.

Their senior year
in sixty-nine
now sets the scene
when mates resign
to stupid play
in nightmare larks
to do the ton
while they're all sparked.

In such a way
this night went down
three rowing mates
would hit the town
in Pedro's car
borrowed from dad
Bagara bound
behaviour sad.

One six pak bought
for two beers each
the road is clear
so thempla speed.
Caught up in a
downhill run, so
Pedro goes for
the magic ton.

Ninety-five is
all they get, so
he backs right off
Ross Gray's in fits.
Back seat driver
to keep his cool
he's not the one
to act the fool.

The trouble is
no girls were there
just rowing mates
with time to spare
in a car on
a moonless night
when freedom flirts
with death's sure bight.

So it goes, as
they back track, beer
he finish on
the Hummocks back.
Walker street will
soon see them home
but first that straight
to thrill the bones.

In the distance
one light flashes
on then off like
dot filled dashes.
Hell's bells such a
bright light this kind
swallowed up by
three puzzled minds.

Not to worry
Ross Gray's in fits
the car shudders
Pedro's up it.
In the back seat
thought finds a home
What is this light?
resets his tone.

The penny drops
in an instant
they're near the ton
so what of it.
He shouts it out
no time to waste
"It's a cane train
hit the f*#n brakes.

No disc brakes then
just drums in shoes
they're fading fast
now what to do.
Down through the gears
helps out a bit
Ross Gray's in front
still having fits.

They pull up short
one car length back
cane bins idle
across the track.
No min min light
had thempla seen
just car headlights
through space between.
