A Promise Is

a little ditty came to
me near sleep:

a promise is a lot to keep

in the beginning
all is clear and crisp
tart, tasty, sweet

but
far too often
as time wears on
the promise
itself
fails
breaks down

so much like a shoestring
bound then broken then
an attempt to amended or mended
all too easily the former position
defended
we who are so often weak
with the oaths we vow to keep
but sub-consciously
un-make as we would a bed
we would not lie in

how our words
are wild winds which sweep
away our intentions
changeable as the wind's direction
its so often a problem far too steep how
a promise is a lot to keep.
