ANOTHER DANDY STORY

Yes, I did drink alcohol in my youth, especially those days in military uniform,
unlike my Father who was mean I was a jovial drunk. I feared no man or
beast under the influence, though still filled with common sense. Knowing
when to fight and when to run. We had been the day before to the Milwaukee,
"USO". Met some young ladies who in a Navy town were inspired by a Airforce
blue uniform. One young lady invited the three of us home for home cooked
dinner. During the day we decided to find out which beer of the local brewries
was best. From a vague memory I think it was Miller highlight or lowlife, Our
new friends had told us about night life in the city. With a fresh start first
place we stopped was advertized free for men in uniforms and a stage upfront.
No seating left it was filled with Sailors. I may have been the only Airman.
Some dude on stage was saying, "And a one and a two--." I thought him quite funny
Sparkly things and champaign bubbles were falling from the ceiling. First time
ever I saw Lawrence Welk live. Looking on the stage unthinking I said, "I think
we are in a gay bar?" Many of our outstanding youth dressed in Sailor suits took
that wrong. My friends were pushing me towards the exit. Out numbered two thousand
to one and my friends were sailors covering my back it was time to move on. Nothing
against Lawrence Welk. It was Mom's favorite show. Having nothing against sailors.
I shared "Mickey Mouse watch", with the boys dressed in white night gear. Just teasing!

The next ballroom we visited also filled with sailors but also had girls
and everyone was dancing. The girl who had asked us to come to dinner was
a darling thing. I don't think she was attracted to me. She liked my uniform.
Anyway she walked up and hugged me. Problem being she had a boyfriend. Now I
am a big man. He was in that class of man I say there is a time to run. Only
I had a couple drinks and he seemed smaller. When the bouncers said take it outside
we headed for the elevator with about a hundred of his fan club following.
Not all of us could get in the elevator at once. I am a polite guy I said, "You go
first dear!" And me and my friends ran for the emergency exit. The door opened and
alarms were sounding all over the ballroom. Chased by sailors down the exit we
went laughing. Just not smart enough to know fear. Safely out in the alley they
were searching for me. I couldn't resist, "Heah, I'm down here girls!" At least one
of my friends joined the otherside. The chase was on as we reached the ground we
heard, "There he is--!" And the chase was on. On the corner was a movie theator.
I handed the ticket taker a ten and said, "Three, keep the change. By the way there
are a bunch of Sailors coming and they are talking about if they charged through
they would not have to pay." He called for reinforcements. Did I mention I am a quick
thinker when chased. We missed the feature and escaped out the back emergency exits.

The next day quite sober, and yes, I was stationed at Great Lakes Naval base. One of
only 50 Airman taking medical classes we had entered the basketball tournament
calling our selves, "The High flyers". The Navy boys were not happy fifty of us had
formed a team and made it to the final championship game. We had heard about this one
sailor who was scoring about thirty points a game. I was lining up for the tipoff.
This giant was jumping center against me. He did not recognize me out of uniform.
Can't leave things alone, "Did you enjoy the movie?" He said, "You're the dude?"
And he threw three or four punches that missed. Did I mention I boxed. He was kicked
out of the game with his thirty plus points. I just raised my hands in the air and
told the ref. "I don't know what his problem is?" The things you do for the team.
He is still looking for me. Oh, the girl? I understand she had moved on to different
men in uniforms. But I think her favorite song was, "Off we go into the wild blue
yonder./dandy
