My First Recollection of Newport



Being a third grader, we had moved from our home in Morehead City, NC to Newport.
We had two different teachers for my brother, Ervin, and I.
It was a school that was reverent and respectful to the Lord to have a hymn to be sung as well as the pledge of allegiance to the flag.
We were made to feel a sense of school pride being in the grade we were.
I will long remember the time when we had gone to the school's library.
I chose a book of theater to read and though I never fully read it I felt important somehow.
We had lived in Newport when the tanker blew up in the Port Authority in Morehead.
It made national news.
Then we had got over this incident and then there was the time my parents lost everything they had.
My brother and I had to sleep on the cold floor where we caught the flu..
It was a bad time for the days we missed in school were many.
These are the things that make up my first recollection of Newport.
