The sunrays filter in
Casting shadows on the wall
He sits digesting life
When memories come to call
Once he was a big strong man
And time was on his side
He had so much to live for
Grandchildren, love, and pride
But now his mind is feeble
And age has robbed him blind
So often he cannot remember
What was just on his mind?

And so another long day passes
Visitors come and go
Sometimes he can almost grasp
This familiar face he knows

Oh the years have swiftly flown
And time brings woeful cries
He sits alone in his big chair
Stone-faced, staring outside
The leaves have fallen off the trees
The chill clings to his bones
He wonders where everyone went
And why they never phone
Sometimes his eyes fill with tears
As he traces deep etched lines
His skin a map of many years
He tracks within his mind
It feels so much like war
A battle he must own
And he smiles with kind eyes
Although he feels alone
Reflections of days gone by
Carry soft notes with the wind
Tugging at him just enough
To make him wince again
He can’t recall the love they shared
Dementia stole it all
This man of strength and courage
Now sits and stares at walls
