MY SEARCH FOR OPPORTUNITY

I heard that life could better be
If I had opportunity
So, I vowed that whatever be
I would get opportunity
Whether it was atop the hills
Or stationed in the heavenlies
Or down within a valley's tip;
Beneath the ocean's muddy steep,
Or kept by sacred seraphs high
Or held hostage by devils wild
I told myself I would not rest
Till I did get the very best
So, I set out to yonder shores
Scouting and seeking this for yore
Just like a costly mineral:
A diamond that could change one's life
But I found it the scarcest good
I met men thus: with shiny face
Who smiled at me but couldn't help
Some looked so kind but could not save
In my despair I felt horrid;
I always thought I would find it
Then thought I, "I would find it cheap'
In places where much people fill
In banks, airports and schools and church
I met once a caucasian friend
Who smiled and offered dollar-gifts
But never opportunity
I could not bear the pangs and said
"Why so scarce, opportunity?
God's fare to polished destinies.
So, I thought hard about their deed:
Did they connive to keep from me
The desired opportunity?
I stopped my search and forgot all
And led a life that was but dull
Till I looked up and found a God
That gave all opportunities
And fought and won their battles, too
Lifted the poor; made such a star
He changed my lot surprisingly
And gave me opportunity.
