He never asked or questioned why
they sent him there where he might die.
He hugged his children, kissed his wife
willing to fight perhaps even lose his life.
In the name of freedom, everlasting liberty
he took up his weapons so we might all be free.
Down in dark trenches, by ship or by plane
he caught the bullets and endured every pain.
No hero's welcome when at last he returned.
Instead they ignored him and our flag they burned.
Standing by my father's last resting place
I remember his nightmares no pill could erase.
Thank you Daddy while fighting that war
it made me remember what I stood for.
Rest well in knowing you did what was right
even if you never desired to enter the fight.
In loving memory of SFC George Hammonds who served in three wars. You are loved and missed by your family and friends. May angels watch over you until we meet again. Love you Daddy.
