I Am Part Cherokee
My mama told me her grandma
Was born part Cherokee.
Said Indian blood ran through my veins...
This fascinated me.
I questioned my granddad at length…
Read all that I could find.
Somehow my Cajun heritage
Was Cherokee combined.
Leaning toward the fanciful,
I found a place to lose
Myself in a game of pretend
And roles were mine to choose.
An Indian princess, proud and strong,
Was one I learned to love.
And I, in this fun fantasy ,
Was known as Little Dove.
My romps throughout the wilderness
Were magical to weave...
I lived and breathed in a world
Burrowed in make believe.
I soared with eagles…ran with wolves
And hunted with a bow.
Spoke languages of grisly bears
And of the screeching crow.
I felt so loved…so satisfied
In the course of my creation.
I was who I was meant to be…
Part of the Indian nation
I searched for stones for necklaces
Through streams of cool, clear water…
Mounted on a pure white steed...
Squired by an unseen Father.
Now, years away from that small girl,
I stand on progeny…
For Indian blood runs through my veins
I’m still part Cherokee.
