An Unfinished Life
(John F. Kennedy)

The twenty second of November
Nineteen hundred sixty three
Three shots rang out in Dallas…
The shock devastated me.

 Five months into a pregnancy
With my final baby boy…
I watched as customers I’d served
Conversed in usual joy.

The chitter chatter over meals
Continued to be heard
Until the breaking news burst in
To silence every word.

Heads turned while every eye was glued
To the TV on display...
 Dallas, it had been announced,
Would welcome JFK.

   Walter Cronkite’s voice choked up…
Unashamedly, he cried
As he informed a startled world
The president had died.

As gasps of disbelief rang out
A cry cut through the air!
In the middle of this mad mayhem
Someone said a prayer.

The baby leaped within my womb!
The news would make me sick!
“O, God, this can’t be happening!”
My tongue felt ten feet thick.

Hot, angry tears ran down my face
As all the facts rolled in.
I felt like I’d lost family...
My memories in a spin.

He’d won my vote and won my heart
This vivacious president
Loved for his laughing easy grin
And bravado government

Patriotism was his theme…
Compassion his criteria.
Ethos… focused on the fact
That no race is superior.

Loved and admired, but hated, too…
Now hatred had been spent.
I wondered if God sensed my grief
In this senseless sad event.

I followed as the media
Covered his widowed wife
Through the final preparations
For this short unfinished life.

This happened fifty years ago
But it's as fresh as yesterday.
O,God, please bless America...
In Jesus' Name we pray.
