I like to think I’m free from pride
But not sure I have attained
A level of humility
Unreserved and unrestrained.
Down on my face before the Lord
His Spirit probes my heart.
I see so much that I don’t like
And it tears me all apart.
The imperfections, when observed
In intensity of Light,
Make me want to run and hide
From my God's Holy sight.
From a distance one is blind
To failures and to faults.
We seal them up and never see
Into these vile vaults.
But the closer we approach our God,
So much more aware we’ll be
Of how severely we fall short,
For in His Light we see
Vanity is our downfall...
Hardly ever recognized.
We're always steeped in vain pursuit...
Our egos oversized.
May God protect us from ourselves...
We're our own worst enemy.
The closer we get to the Light
The better off we’ll be.
Caught in our own reflection
We're faced with reality.
What we see is what we get...
It's not a pretty sight to see.
Yet it should make us realize
How guilty we would be...
If innocence had not stepped in
To rescue you and me.
In dire need of a Savior,
Our God lovingly decided,
He'd only view us through the blood
His wounded Son provided.
So when we're faced with all our faults...
Appalled as we can be.
God doesn't see us in this light...
The blood's all He can see.

Psalm 119:37
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
and give me life in your ways.
Isaiah 5:18
"Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity...."
Ecclesiastes 2:11
Then I considered all that my hands had done
and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold,
all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there
was nothing to be gained under the sun.
Matthew 6:1-7
"Beware of practicing your righteousness before
other people in order to be seen by them, for then you
will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
"Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet
before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and
in the streets, that they may be praised by others.
Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand
know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving
may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will
reward you. "And when you pray, you must not be
like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in
the synagogues and at the street corners, that they
may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have
received their reward. ...
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active, sharper
than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division
of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and
discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
