The Christmas Slippers

Was the Christmas season when the children would be at play.
There was a nine year old boy who was not thinking of playing but of taking care of his ailing grandmother.
She was in her eighties and though full of life was failing and becoming worse.
The little boy, Derrick, had a desire to get her something for Christmas.
So he chose a pair of new slippers for her.
Excited at the possibility of getting her something new for the holiday swelled within him.
He saved all he could save and went to the store.
Looking at the different shoes and other footwear he didn't find any slippers for his grandmother.
So he inquired and when the attendant had returned he had some.
The cost of them was a bit too much and he didn't have enough money.
So he became frantic and wanted to get them for her.
A fellow customer was close by and heard the plight he was in and put up the money.
He had thanked the customer who was behind him and took off for home.
As he got there he saw the ambulance at the door.
His fear came to reality as he dropped the slippers by his side and ran into the house.
It was there the grandmother took her last breath and told him she loved him.
The tears freely fell that afternoon for he had lost the only one who cared.
The heavenly angels seemed to gather around Derrick and comforted him.
He looked at the slippers and began to weep.
But then the words of his grandmother returned and he let out a smile that was warm.
The joy of God seemed to flood his heart and he wasn't lonely any longer.
