she wasn't always ugly..

to think an unwanted poison

day after day

scarred her insides so badly

that the damage
mirrored her outsides that way..

and

no amount of shiny new razors
or
freshly drawn blood

could ever cut away

an ugliness
that seemed
there to stay.

possibly
a karmic punishment

for  believing that makeup

golden tresses
and
pretty dresses

would make her anything different
that her natural state

of a molding decay..

or

that empty compliments
could truly cover
what she sees in the mirror..

a beauty
that she thought she saw
reflected in his eyes..

or what she thought
was his

loving
contented sighs..

but that when he
was between her thighs

he was trying to hide

that he had to dream of others
just to get through the lie..

and

to be soul-searchingly honest
it wasn't he who was to blame..

it just so happened
the two saw through the facade

and

to both

this
inside/outside
ugliness

became one

and the same.
