such little things

back
in kindergarten
I was tardy
nearly
every day that Spring

little things
full of life
were
far too interesting

at the curb
hunched over
to count
the ants

the grime of mud
staining
my pull-on
pants

while I
indulged in small
observations
little
reveries

when soon above
a looming shadow
blocked out
the sky

attached was a
familiar voice
asking me...

"Little girl, what on earth
are you thinking of?"

she attempted to sound
cross, but I heard
beneath a tone of
love

and then I was
lifted by
the waistband of
my pants
into the air

somewhat
like an errant cub
by a fussing Mother bear

"The last school bell
rang
an hour ago, you silly
child,
don't you care?"

"now is not the time
for such little things
though I know you like
all things roaming
tiny and with wings..."

"I know all about
your fascination,
dear, if was my favorite
preoccupation, at your age,
to do this very same thing,
nearly every Spring."
