Life Story # 17

She sits alone in the corner eyes hidden behind dark shades
Rocking gently seemingly to the melody that plays
Suddenly she jumps as she hears the door slam
Shrinking into her own skin when approached by a man
But he didn't even know her, and never glanced her way
If asked what was her story behind her action what would she say
She has taken all she can take, the abuse and pain
How did she last so long, the very though is insane
Seventeen years and even more broken bones
He would leave but she would stay until he came back home
When the children grew up they got as far away as the could
But she remained there thinking it was for the greater good
He loves me she would say to concerned friends and family
You don't know him like I do, so there is no way you can see
Push after push and blow after blow
They begged her to leave but she just couldn't go
But when she awoke this morning a breath and a half from dead
She thought back on all broken bones and all the blood shed
And decided this is it I can't take it no more
She took only what she could carry and crept out the back door
Now in this corner thinking, I have no place to go
I turned my back on my family and everyone I know
How will I survive, whatever will I do?
What would be your next step if this person was you?
We often make these judgment calls from high on comfort hill
So high above any imagination and so far from how she feels
A little less home training, a life in poverty
A slight change in the past and this could be you or me
