'' One Was Already There ''

Kirk and Spock said it for years,
Their escapades would bring you to tears,
Wherever they landed confirmed their worst fears,
Tell the truth if you dare.

Warp drive took them to those outer stars,
Billions of light years far beyond Mars,
For all their efforts they still bear the scars,
Though at times they were left in despair.

They were the Livingstone's of outer space,
Explorers searching for an alien race,
No account taken of the dangers they'd face,
Our culture they wanted to share.

To find new life forms was their ultimate quest,
To complete their mission they would never rest,
What would they discover when put to the test,
If life as we know it's so rare.

Barren planets like our beautiful moon,
Could our Earth be a unique cocoon?
With no chance of finding life anytime soon,
Their task could be one of despair.

Interstellar travel was their domain,
Their enthusiasm they could not contain,
But ultimately their quest would drive them insane,
Sometimes life just isn't fair.

An abundance of life took them all by surprise,
Their prime directive was at the least unwise,
Every planet they visited was to open their eyes,
The inhabitants would stand and stare.

To go where  ''no one '' has gone before?
The outcome was to hurt them right to the core,
Every single planet they chose to explore,
