Would That I Could, But I Can't

When I look around me I see
The craziness in our society:
So many are looking for fame;
Yes, so many seek notoriety.
For instance, we'll take Mister X:
He's not happy with just being a resident--
Not satisfied helping his constituents--
He feels that he has to be President!

(Refrain)
Please give me a drink from that grand loving cup!
Hurry, please hurry ‘cause I ought to shut up.
But...
I want to, but I know that I won't.
Would that I could, but I can't.
Maybe I must, yet I mustn't.
I know that I should, but I shan't.

And then there are those talk radio hosts
Who have nothing better to do
Than to stir up their listeners with nonsense,
Most of which is downright untrue.
I certainly can't help but wonder
Where they obtain all their “facts.”
Can they be as nutty as they sound?
Or are they just putting on acts?

(Refrain)

What about some politicians
Who look down from their lofty towers--
Who don't give a damn about people-
Who blather about nothing for hours?
How do they get where they've gotten?
How many deals have they made
With companies and corporations?
I wonder what favors they trade....

(Refrain)

One more thing that astounds me
Is how the naysayers find their way
Into the hearts of the voters
Whom they will then keep at bay.
They fail to look at the warnings--
At writings so clear on the wall.
They'd rather play dumb and consequently,
Their negligence, oh yes, will kill us all!

SO...give me a drink from that grand loving cup!
Hurry, though, please hurry ‘cause I ought to shut up.
But...
I want to, but I know that I won't.
Would that I could, but I can't.
Maybe I must, yet I mustn't.
I know that I should, but I shan't.
