Twilight comes
and memories flow
in hushed blue tones
Quiet steps
backward
find me recalling,
reminiscing
Music first,
always present
the backdrop to
every recollection
"You are my sunshine,
my only sunshine…"
"I'd like to teach the world to sing
in perfect harmony…"
"Rocky mountain high…"
Then there are
the scents, sights, and tastes
exploding in my brain
incense at benediction,
pungent and sweetly cloying
stained glass panes
leaving sunlit patterns
across the silent floor
skip to the smell of fresh peaches,
juicy strawberries,
sliced into a steel drum of cream
mouths watering in anticipation
as I churn
sticky sibling faces
smiling
in the summer heat
lightning bugs in a mason jar
twinkling captives
on my bedside table
hypnotizing me to sleep
Eyes closing, I muse…
How could time have passed so quickly?
In my mind I'm still twelve
dreaming of what life could be,
what being in love would feel like
Sighs escape
feeling heavy in the night air
weighing the events of a blessed life
brings me to this moment
eyes closed,
head bowed,
I smile
