Welcome to My life in the shadows

NIGHT SONGS

Last night down our lane
someone’s dog began wailing
that long and low sound
that only lonely dogs in pain
can wail.
At first it came
faintly, almost distant and dark
and then nearer, and nearer
until it was that kind of
white light noise
that even children know
can only come of pain,
or mistreatment.
And soon enough
just a little farther away
another dog
took up that lonely wail
and then another,
and another
all singing that same sad tune
until every dog
for blocks around
knew of that master’s cruelness.

I wrote this in answer to a poem I heard on television.
I cannot remember the name of the original author.
