Welcome to My life in the shadows

REACHING

Morning’s announced by the annoying buzz
of our electric alarm clock. Stumbling
from my warm bed I slowly feel my way
to the electric coffee pot, my instant breakfast.
Stirring one as I sip the other I
start my day, and as I open our front door
into the gray mist of dawn I notice
that the stars are out and I reach for them.

Home with night, another days energy
spent within the same hum-drum motions of
the day and the week and the months before.
I sit in the same chair, stare at the
uniformity of each pea on my
plate, while from my place I notice city lights
intermingling with the stars in the sky
and with all my strength,  I reach for them.

Fluffing overstuffed pillow, adjusting
my sheets, from this side to that side to flat
on my back I lie here trying to force
empty sleep into my eyes, but I feel drafts
slipping through our open drapes , I slowly
rise to close our bedroom window,
I remember your kiss and I cherish it
and for that one brief moment, the stars are mine.
