Welcome to My life in the shadows

LOVE LETTERS INTO POETRY

I ran onto a book of love letters from famous people in the past.
I just could not get over the beautiful way they used their pens,
So I turned their love-letters into poetry as best I could…I hope
You will enjoy them.

 To Ellison Begbie

I verily believe, my dear E
that the pure, genuine feelings of love
are as rare in this world
as the pure, genuine principles
of virtue and piety.
I assure you, my dear
[that] I often
look up to the Divine.
…Though I be,
as you know
an awkward lover myself.
Yet, as I have some opportunities
of observing the conduct of others
who are much better
skilled in the affairs of courtship
than I,
that I often think
it is owing to lucky chance
more than good management
that there are not more
unhappy marriages.
This I take to be
what is called love
you cannot refuse.
I am aware
that perhaps the next time
I have the pleasure of seeing you
[that] you may bid me
[to] take my lesson home.
It is love like this alone
which can render
the marriage state happy
as it has always been
my opinion
that married life
was only friendship
in a more exalted degree…

      Robert Burns

Note: Robert Burns was known in his day as a ladies’ man. His letter to Ellison Begbie, who was a “rustic servant girl” it is in my opinion, another example of the wolf in sheep’s clothes. I do hope you enjoy these letters that I am humbly trying to turn into poetry.
Thanks for reading.

 To Josephi
Verona, November, 13th  1796

I do not love thee any more.
On the contrary, I detest thee.
Thou are horrid
very awkward, very stupid,
very Cinderella.
Thou does not write me at all.
Thou does not love thy husband.

What do you do then
all the day Madame?
What matter of such importance
takes up your time
from writing your very good lover?
What affection stifles, and pushes
[to] one side the love
the tender and constant love
which you promised?

Who can be this marvelous,
this new lover?
Josephine beware!
One fine night
the doors will break open
and I will be there!

In truth [my dear]
I am anxious
my good amie
at not receiving your news;
write me quickly four lines
and say those amiable things
which fill my heart
with sentiment and pleasure.
I hope before long
to press you in my arms
and shower [you]
a million burning kisses
as under the equator.

LOVE LETTERS FROM A MAD MAN

My Dearest Little Friend
I am still very ill
And cannot see you today
But hope so to see you
Soon tomorrow
Or Tuesday
Write me a word
Whether you could not come
Before Wednesday
For I am as mad
As the king of Babylon
And will eat only
Chopped herbs
And spinach.
                                 Heinrich

My Dearest Most Graceful of Cats
I do not wish
To see you tomorrow, Wednesday
For I can feel a migraine coming on,
But if you can spend
Just a few moments
On Friday afternoon
Why that would compensate me just fine.
Come and buzz around my nose
With your little wings
For I know a song with a refrain
Come soon it’s buzzing in my brain
Come soon and I will kiss
Each dear little paw
Again and again.

 Heinrich Heine
Heinrich Heine was a German Poet/Composer who feel in love first with his cousin and then with his sister. He finally married a French Woman who spent him into the poor house. These last two letters that I have put into poetic form are from the end of his career.
