when the one you love
gets very sick
and you have to give him
his twice daily medicine

and it makes him gag each time you give it to him

and he looks into you
with different eyes when you give it to him
and he know its
the only way he will feel better

yet he dreads you coming near with it
and he dreads the smell of the medicine
and you dread giving it to him

and the tenure of your relationship has all changed

and you have no language
to discuss how it must feel to endure this
how to explain

you can not ask him
is this worth it
you have to make this decision
for him

because he can't speak

he simply lives and
you need him to live

still
sometimes
you wonder:
am I the one
being selfish?
