A call went out for arms to bear
The weight of war and combat stares
Kept captive those to so engage
In battles fought blood theirs would pay
No simple task to keep mindset
To just survive of tour yet met
As they stepped up to represent
Peace to war with cartridges spent
Overhead the birds of prey
Flew fast, drew flack on course they stayed
Targets ahead, below and high
Drew much fire as pilots died
Tanks rumbled and fired too
Their part to chase those who withdrew
From land not theirs back to their own
As nightfall came, casualties moaned
So many fell on ground and sky
Voices from friends said last goodbyes
On foreign lands that ran with blood
A bloody mess mixed red with mud
And what of those that vapored in
Into thin air, oblivion
Became of them once here not there
Lost now forever family heart bears
A moment yours to bring to mind
Reasons for being as loss brought time
This day, this minute if just to say
Thank you to those that gave away
Life and limb to save this day
A Time of War
To the brave men and women that served and serve, Thank you
