The Messenger Said
The Messenger Said December 7, 2014
The messenger said my child was dead
I have to go, my face I can't show
The next knock at the door put me on the floor
Painted faces, I can't take anymore
Killed for peace at eighteen years
Taken from life, a sad mothers fears
They came in the night, no chance to fight
Crashed my door, no civil right
They were killed today on a Derry street
The Bogside with blood there was no retreat
White flags were ignored, fourteen were taken
Human Rights ignored, so sadly mistaken
How can it be that the killers walk free?
How can it be that I cannot see?
My child left me today for Civil rights
He wanted a vote like all men should
A vote for life, he asked if he could
He died on his street without defeat
Denied Civil Rights his maker to meet
The messenger said my child was dead
I have to go my face I can't show
