It Is Always Rewarding To Be Able To Give At Christmas

Do you remember how you earned money as a kid?
You wanted some extra money for Christmas gifts
Nothing expensive just enough to show you cared

I remember I would go up and down our street
I had offered to shovel the fresh fallen snow
Old neighbors gladly paid me a couple dollars

If lucky I had made enough by late afternoon
Sometimes I had ended up with twenty dollars
It was enough to buy some gifts for my family

I had four brothers, my sister and Mom and Dad
They were just token gifts but it meant alot
That I'd earned my own money at 10 years old

Mom and Dad always gave us a great Christmas
And even though back then the money was tight
They always gave us six kids very nice gifts

But to me even at that young age it felt good
Knowing that I'd earned it by my own hard work
It was rewarding to be able to give to others

There was no reason to have to go out and work
to get that twenty dollars, I know my Dad would
have given it to me. But I had always heard from
both my Dad and my Grandpa Gray that it was always
more special and more rewarding when you had made
the effort to earn your own money that you could
spend to buy an extra or special gift for family
members, especially at Christmas. It was a lesson
that I have always remembered and treasured from
the two greatest men I've ever known in my life.
