TO ALL THE POETS – DAILY POETRY CONTEST

TO ALL THE POETS – DAILY POETRY CONTEST

Any WEBSITE on the Internet is run by a Computer Code. Your browser - Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari etc. is also a program that interprets the code of any website you are browsing and shows the pages from that website. The program to run the website has to cater for all kind of browsers. A command for background music in Internet Explorer IE is bgsound but for browser like firefox, safari, chrome it does not work. Embed is the command for background music in those browsers. This kind of compatibility issue exists not only in different kind of browsers but cause problems within the same browser among new and older versions. Not all new versions have total downward compatibility. This shows the difficulty faced by the Website designers.

Poetry Poem was designed by Monique and her husband Tony. Monique is an artist with a vision and Tony is a Software Engineer with excellent programming skills. He wrote the code for Poetrypoem.com. Code is a 4 letter word but it could be thousands of lines long. Over the time Poetry Poem has evolved with constant improvement. Changes in code could cause some problems. This has to be solved for smooth running of the website.

One of the excellent features of PP is the free daily poetry contest. This was aimed to increase interaction among poets and encourage each other to improve the standard of their poetry writing skill.
The contest is governed by a set of rules. They are:

Daily Contest Rules
1.          Members can vote once each hour.
2.          As of June 16, 2013, poets cannot vote for themselves even though the system lets you.
3.          The winning poem is displayed on www.poetrypoem.com's homepage. This is the only prize.
4.          All poems added to the site are eligible.   Poems deleted from the site may be deleted from the contest and from the contest history.
5.          Poets that change a poem title or poem also change the poem that was voted on in the contest.
6.          Sometime nearly every day voting restarts and the previous day's votes are erased.
7.          The contest is free to members.  Poets don't pay to enter.
The contest is completely free

To make the contest fair and honest it is important to observe and follow the rules. Violating rules is unfair to the participating fellow poets. There is no restriction on how many sites you can have on PP but you can vote using just one of your sites once every hour. Using multiple sites for voting will be a violation of the Contest Rules. Using sites without any poem used for voting is not only violation but is cheating. Rule 2 prohibits a poet voting for his/her own poems. This rule is new and coding is required to stop poets voting for their own poems. At this moment the system lets you vote for your own poems but it is against the rules. To write a code to stop poets voting for their own poems is on Tony's TO DO list but as I mentioned before, modifying the code can cause problems and to resolve the problems could be time consuming. Tony is a volunteer working freely and has to work in his spare time from his job. This means until the loop-holes are fixed any poet can cheat. All we can do is to hope that their conscience guides them to follow the rules and do not cheat until the program is modified.
If you think someone is violating the contest rules it will help PP if you let the crew know.
In the end wishing Monique, Tony, the Crew and fellow poets a prosperous New Year 2015.
Love and peace,
Kris ~ Dreamweaver
Welcoming Committee Member.
2nd January, 2015.
PS: It remains a sad fact that some of our well respected poets still keep voting for their own poems despite repeated posting of the rules. They risk their reputation by breaking rules.
