Endeavor Narcissus

I
learned to like myself
in a culture
which said it was a h*ll
no-no

can't be too paper white
stand too tall and straight
and smell too darn good
with over-sized golden bowl eyes staring
up towards the stars of heaven

even though
I'm a flower
the real true thing

being real
living from the heart
isn't valued
not no how

they all tried to convince me
I wasn't quite right

I knew they were cowards
afraid of themselves
and for some unknowing reason
they were
afraid of me

life can be a teetering premise
of one-up/one-down
see
everyone's gotta watch out
for those whose boat might
be sinking and maybe even for those
who maybe praying for it to sink too

that's not me

I know who I am--
a lovely white flower
with an overwhelming scent
and a powerful presence
one that
gets me
noticed

I cannot help but
be
who
and how
I am

Its
the way
God
made
me

He whispered these words in the wind:

"Dig in your roots little flower
and be strong."
