CAN YOU REMEMBER WHEN?

CAN YOU REMEMBER WHEN?

You had me read a certain passage over and over again,
I read and I wondered, "What am I doing wrong?" Then
Puzzled I looked into your face and much to my surprise
I saw laughter and mischief dancing around your eyes;
Because I was calling the "butterfly" the "beautiful".

Another time I said sadly, "Why couldn't I have been a boy?"
You said, "I would have five boys and not you to bring me joy,
I wouldn't have my girl to walk with the baby and me and sit
And drink Kool-Aid and tell me Bible stories while we crochet and knit.
Not one of my boys could have been the close companion that you are."

You taught me all kinds of things, Mama, how to read and write and love,
How to appreciate small beautiful things that come from our God above;
You showed me how to stop and think about important things in life,
When I was young and immature you helped me to be a better wife.
Had it not been for you this girl would not have turned out well at all.

I look at you now, Mama, now that those days have all gone by,
And many times it takes all that's in me not to grab hold of you and cry;
Daily you count the same five items repeatedly in your little purse,
I've often been tempted to ask your doctor to prescribe a live-in nurse.
But after the decades of love you've given us--your family will care for you.

Can you remember, Mama, when Daddy was alive how we'd all laugh and sing
About the end of this wicked old world and the joys Paradise will bring?
Well, it won't be long now before those wonderful days are really here,
When none of us out of sadness, sickness, death and pain will ever shed a tear;

Mama, I know sometimes you do remember those promises will soon come true.
