Choices

Life is full of choices
Some of these we make
Almost automatically
Either from habit
Or routine

Some choices require thought
Whether we watch a ballgame on TV
Or choose to spend the evening
Writing or going to a movie
With our family
These choices we know
Have more consequence
Sometimes we make these
Without taking the time for thought
And are often left
In the end
Regretting we did not ponder this
Longer

Then there are times in our life
When we find ourselves in a situation
Where no good choice presents itself
At all
Any action that we decide to take
Comes with consequence
Sometimes none of these
Are favorable
For ourselves
Or for the ones we love

These are the choices
We fear most

Sometimes we go to others
Hoping that they can somehow
Guide us to choose correctly
In this
There is no shame
Life is a difficult journey
That no one should ever choose to travel
Alone
And yes
That is a choice as well
In retrospect
We often review
The choices that we have made
Some good
Some bad
Some disastrous
We punish ourselves
And sometimes others
But in the end
Realize that once made
Most choices
Can never be reversed

One thing that I have learned
In my short time on this planet
Is that when we are faced
Faced with one of those
Seemingly life or death choices
The most dangerous choice
That a person can make
Is to choose
Not to make any kind of choice
At all
