I've been this way so many times
with season's moody shift
and still I see you standing there
a vision shining bright
I saw you first one new spring day
your fresh-faced innocence
a wistful streaming stroked your hair
as every strand caught light
Your softly rounded womanhood
still young and ripening sweet
a cotton dress caught every breeze
I envied its caress
I longed for you with every breath
we met each summer's day
and then one morn the sky turned black
as clouds stooped to oppress
My ring returned without a note
I could not understand
but rumours spoke of urban chic
a rich man big and strong
But did his heart turn yours to fire
his rhythm launch new stars
and in Nirvana would his touch
sing echoes of our song
Would little ones sport curls you loved
when tousled hair you craved
I guess they'd have your sapphires blue
be framed in choc'late lace
Once meant for me and you alone
on meadows warm with scent
where we could launch whole galleons
with rapturous embrace
But I was but a country lad
as timid as new snow
my heart it stumbled ardently
with loving hopes you heard
And then your daily calls fell foul
my urgent contacts failed
I could but watch from yonder hill
as with each spoken word
You pledged to love and honour him
a bolder man than me
who'd stepped right up and asked you first
it's his ring now that gleams
I could not stand my legs gave way
as mountains came to dust
for if I had but spoken first
we could have built our dreams
