that artist you saw on the street today
you stared as he portrayed a portrait
each stroke drawn in just the right place
you marveled at how he never erased
but would you believe
it took him twenty years to draw this way
all the wrong lines he's ever rubbed away
if you could gather up all the rubber entrails
you'd have enough to fill a five gallon pail
that poet you found on the web last week
his every couplet was a delight to speak
each word was perfect, beyond critique
you praised his brilliant rhyming streaks
but would you believe
he'd flunked out of english one oh one
he couldn't even write, let alone stun
if you could collect all his drafts undone
they'd probably weigh more than a tonne
that singer you heard on the radio last night
her stunning voice made you feel so light
every verse she sang was free from blight
each note she held seemed to take
but would you believe
she'd failed to get in to community choir
couldn't tell whether pitches were lower or higher
if you could add up all her practicing hours
i don't know how many digits you'd require
that person you viewed in the mirror this morning
may seem like a failure, but it's just the beginning
if only they'd follow their heart's true calling
they could possibly become someone amazing
but would you believe
