Insanity of War

The insanity of war
We experienced firsthand
In a place of true beauty
Though a strange savage land.
Where the Angel of Death
Oft lurked at our door
A constant companion
We could never ignore.

Each day was a challenge
To manage the strain
So, we grew our skins thick
As a buffer to pain
We kept to ourselves
Rarely making a friend
Since we knew that our lives
Very quickly could end.

Oh yes, it was better
To just stay aloof
And in an odd sense
We became bulletproof
Detached from emotion
The devil may care
Truly hard to imagine
Unless you were there.

But of all the insanity
We saw in that war
The thing we considered
Most horrific by far
Was the thought of indeed
Getting close to someone
Which was even more frightening
Than being outgunned.
