An Unopened Book
A Better Man
Sitting in the den winding down from the day,
His son comes running in home from school.
He could see the excitement on his face.
The boy hoped around he could barely stand.
He could see a paper clutched in his hand.
"Now tell me boy what has gotten in you?"
"My teacher asked to write what we want to do"
I smile and said "well now that's great what will you be?"
Jumping up and down he shouted he wanted to be me.
My smile got a little bigger, not ashamed to say I cried.
I took my sons face in my hands and looked him in his eyes.
"Son that is great, I am glad you think so much of me.
But listen son; I am not the man I want you to be."
I could see I took the excitement out of his face.
"Listen to what I have to say, I will explain.
I want you to be more kind, show more kindness than I could.
I want you to forgive more often, like I always should.
Show greater love to the world around you.
Do the things your heart will tell you to.
Cause when you get older I want to be like you."
My son shook his head, but I saw he did not understand.
"My son it is quite simple, I want you to go out and be a better man.
Stand up for what you believe, stand for those.
