Driving angrily on the road
As a lady all in black
Grabbed my entire attention
With her thumb stuck out

A hitchhiker?! I thought curiously,
Slowing down to take a good look
Then our eyes connected and held
A surge of hope came over her

She excitedly started toward me
Her eyes, filled with desperation
My pulse picked up its' pace
Yet I had no heart to turn her away

Smiling, I unlocked my jeep
And she hopped right in
My name is Sarah, she says
I need to get to that town

I nodded and started driving
As my head filled up with thoughts
What if she had a weapon?
What if I became a victim?

She busied herself with her purse,
Fixing her face with make up
Her hair was in every direction
As I struggled to keep my breathing calm

We rode on in silence
For a few minutes
My paranoia, increasing
With every mile I drove

Finally we got to a red light
"Right here," she said, "Thank you"
And she hopped out of my jeep
As I stared after her in a daze

My anger was all forgotten
For it was replaced with danger
I murmured thanks for my safety
And wondered of this lady in black
